Spring into Fall: Couture Fashion Show

Iranian born Gelareh Alam first arrived in San Francisco in 2001 as a child psychology graduate having no idea she would be led to pursue fashion let alone evolve into a well known designer. As a self-taught artist with passions in sculpture and fine art, she found herself following that track in the states. It wasn't long before a friend recommended she pursue design + there began her track in fashion school. Viewing clothing as sculpture and drawing inspiration from her experiences growing up in Iran, where womens' creative expression is not only stifled, but forbidden, she found fertile ground in the U.S. to create + design her wearable art. Exposure on NBC, back to back fashion shows, along with her fearless attitude toward pushing the limits of fashion "rules", gave way to Gelareh Couture, her label and new identity as an artist in this world. The fusion of her worldly, eclectic tastes and complex, futuristic designs has breathed a new enthusiasm into the SF design scene and beyond.

Gelareh was recruited to design for the Jan Hilmer 2010 women's line and moved on to a design role for a new virtual world/online playground, VIE: Virtual Island of Entertainment, which launched last year.

She is now recognized by her staggeringly dramatic + complex designs while still elegantly accentuating femininity of a woman. Each piece is defined by strong lines, delicately revealed erogenous zones, and an innovative interplay of cotton, leather, and lace. She is now at the helm of a beautiful success story and of all of her achievements, the most important one, still undone, is to freely show her collections back home in Iran someday.
